Talking about mental health is challenging, especially when you grow up in a community where it feels like no one talks about it at all. In Hispanic families, there’s often an unspoken rule to keep struggles to yourself, push through, and not show “weakness.” I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve heard, “échale ganas” (just push harder) or “no seas dramático” (don’t be dramatic) when I tried to open up.
Growing up, I felt like I had to carry everything on my own because I didn’t want to alarm my family. My parents had enough to deal with, working long hours and keeping the family afloat. Talking about mental health didn’t feel like an option. And I know I’m not the only one who’s felt this way.
There’s a lot of love in our culture, but sometimes that love comes with silence when it comes to mental health. That silence can feel heavy. It’s not just about personal struggles—it’s about stigma. For some, it’s the fear of being judged or labeled as “crazy.” For others, it’s a lack of access to mental health resources, especially for families who might not have the money, insurance, or even the language to navigate the system.
But we can break the silence. It starts with small conversations and acknowledging that mental health struggles are real and that it’s okay to ask for help. I’ve seen what happens when we talk openly. It brings relief, understanding, and even hope.
We need to remind Hispanic teens that taking care of their mental health isn’t a weakness. It’s strength. It’s showing up for yourself and your community in a way that inspires others to do the same. Together, we can create a culture where no one has to feel like they’re struggling alone.
Let’s start talking. Let’s break the silence.
