I started out writing about the myths surrounding suicide. But as I took the week to think about all I wanted to address, I realized it was too much of a trigger for me to write about suicide. This made me realize that triggers need to be addressed.
Triggers are what cause an event or situation to happen or exist. The same way eating shrimp causes an allergic reaction to someone with a shellfish allergy, sometimes words and experiences cause specific, negative reactions.
For me, a person who who has dealt with suicide, thinking about writing about suicide triggered me to feel uneasy and even have some anxiety. We all have triggers whether we struggle with mental illness or not. For some, the trigger can cause them to relapse; for others, triggers can cause an individual to feel more depressed or helpless.
The biggest advice I have about triggers is to pay attention to them. If someone’s words trigger something negative for you, write it down or remember it so you’re better prepared for future instances. Also find healthy ways to react to triggers. For me, simply acknowledging that I just experienced a trigger and then writing how it affects me helps.
