Everyone has those days when they look at themselves in the mirror and think, “I’m not good enough.” and we ALL know they suck.

Nothing is more important than how you feel about yourself. When you have a healthy and high self-esteem, you’re more attractive to others, you enjoy inner stability and most importantly, you’re happier.

Here are some helpful tips for maintaining a healthy and high self-esteem.

  1. Stop Your Inner Critic

Your inner critic can drag you down. Replace this negative voice with constructive thoughts and you’ll change how you view yourself. One way to do so is to stop the critic when it invades your mind. Create a trigger-word or stop-phrase to do this.

  1. Use Healthier Motivation Habits

Motivate yourself to take action. Whatever you’re not happy with about yourself, find a way to improve it. If you want to be in better shape, exercise, eat healthier, and get more sleep. When you really want something in life, it’s easy to push yourself through the resistance.

  1. Find Three Good Things

What are three things you can appreciate about yourself? Make a list. They don’t have to be big things. Maybe you got an ‘A’ on your test or helped your sister with her homework. Maybe you took a brisk walk.

  1. Don’t Strive For Perfection

Perfectionism is destructive. For example, if I spend two extra hours on a school project to make it perfect, it won’t bolster my grade much and I’ll be sacrificing sleep, exercise, or something else I had to do. This black-and-white thinking is a hard habit to break.  I’m working toward good enough. Because if you aim for perfection, you’ll never finish anything. If you can look back at what you’ve done and think, I accomplished what I set out to do, stop. You’re done.

  1. Hang With Supportive People

Avoid time with unsupportive people, and spend more time with positive, uplifting people. Stop reading trashy magazines or watching shows that leave you feeling negative. Instead, read, listen to music and participate in activities that enhance your self-image.

  1. Handle Mistakes and Failures In a Positive Way

If you leave your comfort zone to accomplish anything significant, I PROMISE it won’t be easy. But that’s okay. When you make a mistake, stay optimistic and focus on new opportunities presented. What you can learn from your mistake? Your answer will help change your perspective.

  1. Be Kind To Others

When you’re kinder toward others, you tend to treat yourself in a kinder way, too. Do simple things like holding the door open for someone or encouraging an unmotivated friend.

  1. Don’t Compare Yourself

When you compare yourself or your life to others, you never win. There’s always someone who has it better and someone who has it worse.  Replace this unhealthy habit by comparing yourself to… yourself. Look at how far you’ve come and whatever progress you’ve made. This will motivate you to keep going and never give up.
